Hier die offizielle Pressemitteilung über diese Aktion:
Belgrade – Euro-P.A.S. and its Belgrade partner organization Animal Rescue Center (ARC) are organizing the Castration Action for stray dogs that live in the capital of Serbia. The action is going to start on 21st October 2009 and it will last two weeks. Mrs Kohlhause and Mr and Mrs Konstantin are veterinarians from the German organization Europäischer Tier- und Naturschutz (ETN) who are going to neuter 280 stray dogs in Belgrade. The Castration Action has a full support of the Belgrade City authorities. One of the main purposes of ETN is the organization and accomplishment of castration measures in South and Eastern Europe and in many parts of the world where stray animals need help. Castration is the simplest and the most effective measure for limiting the number of stray animals and for preventing the spread of infectious diseases. The City of Belgrade has initiated a neutering and vaccination campaign to protect stray dogs from rabies and to control their growing population three years ago. The new City Sterilization centre (“The Veterinary institution with a shelter for dogs”) was open in Belgrade at the beginning of October and the Strategy for resolving the problem of stray animals will continue in much better conditions. The Centre is also the central City shelter with the capacity for 450 dogs and it is a very functional and modern complex. There are reception boxes where stray dogs will stay until they are fully examined. Sick dogs will be transported to a quarantine where they will be treated before sterilization. Healthy dogs are going to be sterilized, chipped and vaccinated. Specialists will work with aggressive dogs to find out if they could be socialized. The City Strategy now has new humane aspects. There is the Educational centre in the complex in which children from elementary schools and special needs children will learn how to treat stray animals and pets. In the past, it was possible to adopt a stray dog, but now the Centre has the adoption service with a showroom where people will be able to spend some time and play with dogs, and to choose which one they want to adopt. The Centre is preparing a web-site with photos of the dogs for adoption. There is a protocol for adoption to ensure that any dog will not be abandoned in the future. The opening of the new Sterilization centre with the shelter for dogs is the turning point of animal protection in Belgrade. ETN, ARC and Euro-P.A.S. are happy to be a part of that process. During the last three years, the City strategy already gave results; there are less stray dogs than before. Serbian stray animals need every possible help because dogs and cats need new homes. New adoption centres, the consistent implementation of sterilization and adoptions in Serbia and abroad are good ways to provide a better future for all of them.
